Mosquito repellents for baby's and kids
Use topical repellents that have the four proven active compounds within their chemical structures, but most importantly at the appropriate chemical concentrations. They include the likes of DEET at a 20-50%) concentration and PMD at a 30% concentration.
Reapply repellents at least 6 to 8 hours after using DEET or 4 to 6 hours for PMD.
Remember they wear off at a quicker rate with kids outdoor activities like swimming, crawling and other activities that induce sweating especially while in warmer climates.
Be aware of this and the importance of reapplication.
DEET can be used on babies over 8 weeks of age, toddlers and children.
PMD can be used on children over 3 years of age.
Some previous reposts in the past may have indicated encephalopathy in kids within the 80s and 90s, but the US Environmental Agency, other independent studies and various clinical trials show that there is not a link between encephalopathy and DEET.
Regarding the application procedures, it is very important that you as parents read the repellent application instructions. Data shows that a 1/3 to 1/2 of parents apply repellents incorrectly.
It may not be good practice to apply repellents to both kids skin as well as their clothing. It may also be good practice to remove topical remnants around bedtime.
Some research has showed that DEET 33.5% reduces Sun Protection Factor (SPF). Another interesting point is that when sunscreen is applied over repellent it could reduce the effect by 1 hour or so. So remember to reapply earlier if this is the case.
