Massaging your baby
Massage is a wonderful way to show your baby that you love him, as well as helping calm him when he’s unsettled. It has lots of health benefits, too, including boosting the immune system, improving circulation, and toning muscles.
WHAT YOU NEED
- Baby oil or lotion
- Soft towel for your baby to lie on
- Calming music
HOW TO MASSAGE
You can massage your baby from about two weeks. Choose a time when he is not sleep and do it in a warm room with warm hands.
A good time to massage is last thing at night, after your baby’s bath, when he is calm and relaxed. It’s also best to do it between feeds: if he has just been fed he may be too full to be comfortable; similarly if he is hungry he may quickly become unsettled.
If your baby doesn’t like to be undressed, leave his vest on and just work on his legs and arms. Otherwise, work from the head down with light strokes, massaging both sides symmetrically. Be very gentle at first, increasing the pressure only when and if your baby is obviously happy. When you have massaged his front, turn your baby over and begin massaging his back, working from the head down.
If your baby does become fretful, it’s best to stop and try again another day.
